The employee turnover rate is the percentage of employees who leave during a period, found by dividing departures by the average number of employees.
To calculate turnover rate, divide the number of people who left during a period by the average headcount for that period, then multiply by one hundred. For example, twelve leavers against an average of a hundred staff is a twelve percent annual turnover rate.
The number only means something in context. Compare it to your industry, track it over time, and break it down by team or by first-year leavers to find where the real problem sits. Our free calculator does the math for you in seconds.
