Crossboarding

Quick definition

Crossboarding is the process of moving an existing employee into a new role or team inside the same company, with its own onboarding into the new position.

Crossboarding is onboarding for internal moves. When someone is promoted or transfers, they still need new access, new training, a new manager relationship, and a clear plan, even though they already know the company.

It matters because internal moves are often handled casually, which leaves people stuck between two roles. A structured crossboarding journey transfers their old responsibilities cleanly and sets them up to succeed in the new one, which protects both retention and productivity.
